SEIU Local 199 Executive Board votes to approve merger

December 21, 2021

On Tuesday November 30th, the Executive Board of SEIU Local 199 voted unanimously to merge with our sister Union—SEIU Healthcare Minnesota!

SEIU Healthcare Minnesota (SEIU HCMN) unites 50,000 healthcare workers in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and home care across the states of Iowa and Minnesota. SEIU HCMN has been working with the staff and leaders of Local 199 under a formal service agreement to provide support for the members in Iowa for several months.

The merger was approved by the SEIU International Union Executive Board and will take effect on January 11, 2022. Under terms of the merger agreement, SEIU Local 199 members will remain SEIU members, with our membership rights and responsibilities, transferring to SEIU HCMN at that time.

The Executive Board of the merged union will schedule a special member convention in early 2022 to consider proposed changes to the HCMN Constitution and By-laws and a new name to include Iowa members as a full partner in the new, unified healthcare workers union for Minnesota and Iowa.

Barb Stanerson, President of SEIU Local 199, shared the following, “We are excited for this merger with SEIU Healthcare Minnesota! The Minnesota Healthcare Union is well positioned to help us build a stronger Union in Iowa. With access to a large and experienced staff, member leadership, resources and communication programs, our Iowa membership will be even stronger as we move into the future.”

Jamie Gulley, President of SEIU Healthcare Minnesota, hailed the vote as a positive step for the members of both Unions, “By unifying our two Unions we will have greater strength and opportunity to raise standards for healthcare workers through organizing the unorganized, collective bargaining and political action to lift up working families. With this merger we are living up to our core values and belief in SEIU that we are stronger together!”

Local 199 unites 4,500 Nurses, Professionals and Service workers at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, at Finley Hospital, Aase Haugen Senior Services, Strawberry Point Lutheran Home, Bettendorf Health Care Center along with Head Start workers at the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program.
