The custodians of the Central DeWitt Schools first organized as a stand-alone association. But in the 1990s they united in SEIU, and in 1999 they helped found SEIU Local 199, Iowa’s education and healthcare local.
For decades, the custodians negotiated solid contracts with a full range of professional standards and protections. But in 2017, Iowa lawmakers passed the law attacking public employees. The Central DeWitt administration took the low road in the next round of negotiations and stripped everything out of their contract except wages.
The district did create an employee handbook that includes some of the language from our former contract, and they do provide some guidance in the workplace. (Click here for the custodians’ handbook.) But this handbook is no substitute for a full and fair union agreement.

The binding wage agreement that we do have with the Central DeWitt Schools is below.
