While days to appreciate teachers and others have been ongoing, “there has never really been a support staff day per se,” said Marshall Clemons, Service Employees International Union Local 199, Cedar Rapids chapter. Clemons is an engineer at Harding Middle School.

The day is for school support staff around Iowa, including bus drivers, secretaries, security officers and print shop workers — basically everyone who is not a teacher or administrator.

Other examples are auto mechanics, audio/visual, building engineers and maintenance, carpenters, custodial, distribution specialists, food and nutrition, grounds maintenance, print shop workers, security officers and others.

The day applies to all Iowa school districts.
