SEIU Local 199 members teach the youngsters, drive the buses, prepare the meals, and clean the buildings all in an effort to create the optimal learning environment for tens of thousands of Iowa children. We are the backbone of our public schools, usually working outside the spotlight, but working closely with children every school day in and outside the classroom.

We, the working men and women of Local 199 believe we have a moral responsibility to the future generations to leave the world a better place for all who come after us. But we, the school workers of SEIU Local 199, are also united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide. Therefore we work hard to stand with and for our brothers and sisters to make sure that through our collective strength we are paid and treated with the respect that we deserve.

SCHOOLS: CHAPTERS BEGIN BARGAINING; FACE PRIVATIZATION

As 17 of our school districts head into bargaining this year, the specter of privatization hangs over them. Schools Rep Devin Mehaffey has already begun working with members on counter offensives in a number of districts. The plan is to bring the collective strength of all of our schools chapters to bear in each district, because Stronger Together is a reality and not just a slogan.

As the economy weakens, and tax revenues decline, schools districts will look to privatization under the guise of “saving the taxpayers money.” Also, as clients dry up for private companies, they will be looking to public schools as a new source of income. SEIU Local 199 has no intention of letting these nonunion privateers put working families at risk.
